The Scheldeland

Liezele is located in Puurs, where you can find unique heritage, top regional products, and plenty of natural beauty. Puurs is the birthplace of asparagus, the regional product from Klein-Brabant and, by extension, Scheldeland.

In Puurs, Duvel also matures! This delicious beer is brewed here in the Duvel-Moortgat brewery. Just a kilometer from the rectory, you can also find the Valke Vleug wine estate, which, despite its young age, has already won several awards for its sparkling wines.

The fortresses of Breendonk and Liezele

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Fort of Liezele and the Fort of Breendonk were important links in the defensive belt around the port city of Antwerp. Despite the active role the forts played during the first months of the war, they emerged relatively unscathed from the conflict. Fort Liezele is, in fact, the best-preserved concrete armoured fort of the entire Antwerp fort belt.

The Fort of Breendonk would play a grim role as a prison camp during the Second World War. In the summer of 1947, the site was declared the National Memorial of the Fort of Breendonk. Today, Breendonk is one of the best-preserved camps in Europe and is part of the War Heritage Institute.
